Pattinson learns to run like hero
Robert Pattinson has revealed he had to train to run like a true action hero for new Twilight movie Eclipse.
The 24-year-old Hollywood heartthrob confessed to Reveal magazine his run in the first two Twilight films as brooding vampire Edward Cullen had been a bit weak, so he hit the treadmill.
Robert laughed: „I had to learn how to run properly. In the last two films, I ran in a limp/skip. I had to run more solidly this time so I spent a lot of time on a giant treadmill. It was like one of those things that mice run around in.“
Robert also had to brush up on his fighting skills for a scene with new co-star Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays villain Victoria.
The actor admits he used a body double for the most dramatic parts, but movie bosses were still impressed with his action moves.
Robert revealed: „Weirdly, one of the producers told me: ‘Wow, you look so enthusiastic in that fight scene. Much more than in any other one in the series’. It’s always hard to do stuff with Bryce because she’s the gentlest person and is always laughing. And she’s afraid of hurting me!“
Francis Lawrence, the director, sat under a black awning against the circus bleachers. His face was calm with a slight smile of satisfaction as he watched the footage. He exchanged words with the AD (Assistant Director). Almost immediately I heard the cue: “Pictures up!” A pause. “And BACKGROUND!” On background we all began the exhilarating sprint from danger once more. A plume of dust rose from our pounding feet and swirled around the swinging lamps. Wind pushed the top of the tent up and down like waves. As the motion of canvas, lamps, and people rushed about, the enormous elephant stood calmly in the center of the ring. “And CUT! Thank you folks! Good job.”
On my walk back across the circus floor I noticed a new excitement. There was no audible noise but something seemed different. When I came around the last large tent pole Pattinson had appeared at the end of the menagerie. I heard the start of the AD’s instructions. “Rob, we’re going to have you….” The young actor looked controlled and confident even while hundreds of Rubes tried to secretly glance in his direction. Most of the cast had arrived at their original mark but I was still walking. Fortuitously I was placed near the entrance to the tent just a few feet from where Rob was now standing.
TWILIGHT’S leading man Robert Pattinson reckons viewers will be „shocked“ with the new film, Eclipse, directed by 30 Days Of Night filmmaker David Slade.
„It is much more action-oriented. It is much more frantic and there needs to be more immediacy about everything,“ he said.
„The tone is a lot harsher. The fight scenes are much more scrappy and feral.“
The 24-year-old, whose portrayal of the brooding vampire has transformed him into a heartthrob, says his character has become a changed man due to his romance with Bella.
„Edward has a different mindset in this one. He’s jealous and petty to other people. With Bella, he’s possessive,“ he says.
„Even though the love triangle developed in New Moon, it’s much more present in Eclipse. Edward really has to fight with Jacob and feels like he has to prove himself to Bella.“
In Eclipse, the third instalment in the saga, Bella’s life is threatened by an army of newly-turned vampires who are out to create havoc and are led by Riley (Xavier Samuel).
As if fighting against an army of hungry blood-suckers is not enough, Edward – with his traditional values of celibacy before marriage – and Jacob also have to battle for Bella’s heart.
The love triangle reaches a turning point and the warring vampire and werewolf have to put their own rivalries aside to protect Bella from the newborns.
Xavier Samuel says he is „relishing“ being a villain. „Everyone hates you if you’re the villain, but it’s a lot of fun. I get to throw people off burning cars and smash into walls,“ he said.

You can learn a lot about a character — and an actor — talking to a film’s costume designer. Here, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse‘s Tish Monaghan reveals a few secrets from the wardrobe closets:
• Robert Pattinson wanted to wear karate pants for the training sequence. “So we got him some karate pants, and it’s like the crotch hangs down to the knees, and I just thought, Ugh. Who’s gonna go for this? Because everything has to be approved by Summit,” Monaghan says. “We took them in a little bit, and they loved the karate pants. Who knew? I was so surprised.”
• Even at the film’s premiere, people squealed when Taylor Lautner turned around in that black T-shirt. “It was almost embarrassing. I felt so bad for him,” Monaghan says, with a laugh. “They were screaming and going ‘Wooooo!’” As she’d done on New Moon, her M.O. was to put him in smaller size Gap or Banana Republic T-shirts to emphasize his biceps, tightening the tees around the arm holes and taking them in down the side. (Pattinson wore Gap T-shirts, exclusively, she adds. “They were what fit him best. They had the best colors. So that’s what he ended up wearing, even when Edward takes Bella up to the tent. It may strike people as odd, but he doesn’t feel temperature, so that’s why we only put him in a shirt, and Bella’s all bundled up, and Jacob, of course, is running around shirtless.”
Well at least now we know a main reason why the two parts of „Breaking Dawn“ are seeing their production costs rise: New York Magazine’s Culture Vulture blog got the news late last week that the Big Three stars of „The Twilight Saga“ finagled some major pay increases for the final two installments of the franchise that made them household names.
Each is making $25 million for the two film deal, plus 7.5 percent against its gross revenue, which (based on the amount „New Moon“ made in theaters) will give them $41 million a piece.
As /Film points out, that’s more than three times as much as the stars made in „New Moon“ ($12 million a piece). There’s no word on how much Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner made for „Eclipse,“ but we’re assuming it’s still under the $20 million mark.
Such a pay upgrade isn’t unheard of, as the Big Three in „Harry Potter“ (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson) are each making an estimated $50 million a piece for both parts of „Deathly Hallows.“ Still, those are their seventh and eighth films in the „Harry Potter“ franchise, and their work on the films has spanned more than a decade. Compare that to this being Kristen, Rob and Taylor’s fourth and fifth films in a franchise that has only been in production for a little over four years.
Obviously Summit has money that they’ve made off „The Twilight Saga“ to burn, as we told you yesterday, but we hope that they are spending some of that on upping the budget of the film to work in some better special effects (imagine if Catherine Hardwicke had to film the Renesmee birthing scene with her $37 million budget), instead of just nailing down their big stars.

David Slade reveals how Edward and Bella closed set scenes were ultra serious *SPOILER ALERT!*
TWILIGHT Saga: Eclipse director David Slade has revealed that laughter was temporarily banned on his film set.
Eclipse director David Slade today told how he ordered a closed set – when only a handful of crew members are allowed in – during the romantic scene when Robert Pattinson’s character Edward Cullen proposes to Kristen Stewart’s character Bella Swan.
Speaking at a press conference in London, ahead of tonight’s Twilight Saga: Eclipse UK premiere, David said: „It was a closed set [for the proposal scene].
„That stuff is always awkward to shoot and people aren’t always comfortable with each other.
„There was no giggling and joking around. Everyone takes it professionally.“
He added: „Rob and Kristen didn’t seem to be nervous at all. They seemed to play with each other.
„We shot the proposal on the very last night and it came together wonderfully. I have to give complete credit to the actors for that one because they really did pull it off.“

There is an elephant in the room, metaphorically. He is a most handsome, most famous, most perplexing elephant. His name is Robert Pattinson, a superstar among Twi-hards who follow his every breathless, bloodless moment in the Twilight series.
But „the room“ is an American indie film called Remember Me, beautifully crafted with an air of thoughtful melancholy by director Allen Coulter. This is the story of a New York university student estranged from his wealthy father, in trouble with cops, and intrigued by the daughter of one detective who has already smashed his face in during an alley fight. The film just debuted on DVD following its modest theatrical run, timed to coincide with Friday’s release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
In Remember Me, Pattinson gets to play a real human being in a romantic drama populated by other functioning humans. They are flawed, complex, interesting people played by Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, Lena Olin, wonderful child actress Ruby Jerins and Australian discovery Emile de Ravin as the object of Pattinson’s burning desire. No one drinks blood, although this saga is rife with tragedy.
Coulter, a New Yorker, is on the phone explaining how Pattinson, already cast in the first Twilight, was eager to find an antidote — something radically different — even before its release. Executives at Summit Entertainment, producers of Twilight, were looking to help out.
„Honestly,“ Coulter recalls of an early luncheon meeting with Pattinson, „he was not known, Twilight had not been released and there was no way to see it. We just knew he was interested. Sitting in front of us was a guy who was scruffy, intense, charming, unpretentious.“
The real danger on the set of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse didn’t involve vampires or werewolves. It was all the flying saliva.
„We’re always like an inch away from each other’s faces, screaming at each other, spitting at each other in the face. It gets a little awkward,“ Taylor Lautner told PEOPLE of costar Robert Pattinson at Monday’s Cinema Society and Piaget-hosted screening of their latest Twilight film in New York.
Did Pattinson have to duck any major projectiles? „Not anything super dramatic,“ Lautner says, „but I’m sure he caught a couple splats.“
Shouting at each other doesn’t come naturally for two guys who don’t, in real life, despise each other. And so, the scenes often veer into laughter. „Rob and I ruin a lot of takes,“ Lautner admits. „It’s hard to keep a straight face, because we actually like each other. So, it’s pretty funny.“
With Pattinson filming Water for Elephants, Lautner, 18, was joined at the screening by costar Kristen Stewart, 20. Both actors said they’ve been enjoying some relatively quiet time recently.
Lautner said he’s been following the World Cup – „I was rooting for the U.S., and that was a bummer,“ he says – while Stewart has been indulging her passion for music and cooking. „I’m fairly obsessed with [indie rocker] Jenny Lewis right now,“ she admits. „I’m in a state of grief because I’m missing her show in L.A.“
But the cooking is going well – and it sounds like Stewart is being resourceful. „I like making pies,“ she says. „I have a bunch of fruit trees in my backyard. My loquat tree sprouted, and I like making loquat pie. They’re really hard to peel and everything, and it took me forever, but they make the best pies. They’re amazing.“
