NEW YORK .- „A bit confused, but yes, I think I am a romantic type,“ says actor Robert Pattinson, who after the global mega-hits achieved by the Twilight vampire saga, now believes the romantic drama Remember me (Remember Me) , Allen Coulter, which opens next Thursday.

„If being romantic means not to be cynical and keep the innocence against the relationships, in that sense I am a romantic type,“ says Pattinson, few minutes before he entered the hotel suite at the Regency in Manhattan surrounded by a large entourage of publicists, assistants and bodyguards, which gave his comments totally ironic touch.

Down on Park Avenue, a further large group of paparazzi standing guard to try to catch him in a picture with his „girlfriend,“ Kristen Stewart, co-star of the movie Twilight, and is evident even prefer not to name. Despite the excitement generated in the hallways its mere presence, or feel good to talk to a group of foreign journalists, including La Nacion, Pattinson leaves behind all its aura of mystery vampire and, with his hair disheveled, stubble and dressed in faded jeans and gray shirt wrinkled, London seems to become a normal boy of 23 years, smart and cool. It has a sharp eye, you immediately look to lock complicity with men and in an instant can become willfully enigmatic, almost shy, when speaking to a woman, which clearly causes the desired effect, especially in adolescent girls about world go crazy for him.

EF was fortunate enough to be invited along to the premiere of Robert Pattinson’s latest drama Remember Me, which is released in cinemas today. We caught up with Robert, his co-star Emilie de Ravin and one of the film’s producers Nick Osborne as they discussed the making of one of this year’s finest films.

Robert Pattinson had been looking for a new direction between Twilight sequels and literally read hundreds of scripts before picking Remember Me. He liked the naturalistic dialogue of the story and how the story dealt with grief. He also noted that this character starts and ends the movie as pretty much the same guy- it was a young part devoid of the usual Hollywood transitions when everything ties up nicely at the end. He joked that he doesn’t really like anything so picking a next project was easy. He clearly isn’t driven by money either so when the opportunity for Remember Me came along, he knew it was the right project. Robert also feels like these types of movies aren’t around very much today and saw a gap in the market to do such a narrative.

When asked if he feels that Tyler and Edward Cullen are similar brooding characters, he thinks that Tyler isn’t very broken or damaged at all, at least not how he saw him. He never felt that Tyler was brooding and that’s probably why Pattinson’s performance is so convincing here – it’s a character with no sense of pretention even though Robert admitted to liking Tyler’s audacity. Robert feels that the success of Twilight and indeed Lost will give Remember Me some publicity that will hopefully attract a bigger audience to the drama. I feel that it’s because of his other successes that Pattinson can take on roles like this and in many respects get a movie made that may struggle without his pulling-power. Remember Me also goes a long way to showcase Robert Pattinson as a serious actor and one that will have career longevity past The Twilight Saga.

Move over Hugh Grant and Daniel Craig. Right now, Robert Pattinson is the biggest British movie star in Hollywood. Since hit vampire films Twilight and New Moon, R-Patz mania has exploded. Once, girls left notes on his car windscreen. Now they set themselves on fire outside his hotel.

„You start getting a bit paranoid,“ he admits. „Looking around when you’re walking down the street, in case you get mobbed by teenage girls.“

When Pattinson, 23, shot his latest film, romantic drama Remember Me, in New York, the hysteria almost killed him. Spotted by a bunch of ‘Twi-hards’ (as his obsessive fans are known), he crossed the road – narrowly missing being hit by a taxi. Everywhere, fans crowded to watch him shoot scenes with co-star Emilie de Ravin.

„It was mad,“ he says. „I didn’t see it coming. I thought it was going to be a little film shot in New York, and I’d be able to just hang out!“

For Pattinson, those days are long gone. „I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to not be seen,“ he explains. „It’s annoying but the pay-off is infinite.

If no one finds out where you’re staying, if people aren’t following you, or outside a restaurant if you have dinner there… then it’s great.“

The big question is over his relationship with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart. The pair reputedly got together when filming New Moon, but when Stewart collected the Orange Rising Star Bafta in February, they arrived separately – presumably to avoid a ‘Twi-hard’ riot. Does he find it even more difficult to go out with Stewart?

„It’s difficult either way,“ he says, refusing to elaborate. „When the spotlight seems centred on you, the best thing is to remain as much of a mystery as you can.“

As Hollywood’s hottest property, Robert Pattinson doesn’t need to sit around waiting for the phone to ring.

Sifting through a mountain of scripts and trying to navigate a satisfying career path, while everyone wants a piece of him, will be a more familiar scenario.

With the whole world watching his every move, how did the star of the Twilight films decide to follow the smash hit New Moon with humble independent movie Remember Me?

Fairly easily, it turns out.

“I never like anything, so it’s quite easy to decide what to do,” he admits, candidly.

“I’ve never felt any pressure to do anything, particularly. Even when we were shooting it I never thought about the box office.”

It may be far from his mind, but Pattinson, known as R-Patz to his adoring fans, is certainly box office-friendly. Propelled to stardom as the pale and mysterious vampire Edward Cullen, he now inspires hysteria whenever he steps out in public.

Today is no exception, and journalists preparing to grill him about his latest release have had to wait patiently as he works the red carpet outside the film’s premiere in London’s Leicester Square, signing autograph after autograph for overwhelmed fans.

In person, he is undeniably good looking, with a striking bone structure, tousled hair and cheeks decidedly rosier than those of his vampire alter ego.

He is also rather self-deprecating, and has a tendency to backtrack and correct himself while he’s speaking. Even so, he seems to know his own mind when it comes to career choices.

“I had read tonnes and tonnes of scripts over the summer after I did Twilight, I mean hundreds, and everything seemed exactly the same.

I was lucky enough to attend the London premiere of Remember Me and meet Robert Pattinson and Emilie De Ravin earlier this month. Rob and Emilie chatted about their film, their roles in Twilight and Lost, and lots more. In Part One of this series of interviews Robert reveals how he felt during the fight scenes, how he views father figures, his role in Bel Ami and his relationship with his friends and family. Stay tuned for the next installments!

On playing brooding types, and whether he’d consider a lighter role: „I did the kind of lighter stuff before Twilight came out, and it just so happened that Twilight’s become so much about the archetype of the brooding person. I mean I never thought that Tyler was that brooding to be honest [laughs], and then I just get it at every single thing, people saying, „brood, brood, brood“ — I hadn’t even heard the word before Twilight! I guess I like to play broken and troubled characters because it seems more interesting, especially because I’m not that broken and troubled myself.“

On his new roles: „I’m doing something now [Bel Ami] that’s still quite dark, but the guy, his character isn’t so fractured, he’s just someone who’s incredibly focused and has a lot of confidence in himself, and nothing can shake his confidence. And then after that, I think there’s a kind of lighter thing as well. I don’t know, it’s not really that they’re angsty it’s just that joy seems to be more a universal emotion in script, it’s quite difficult — if you’re happy, you’re happy.“

La Provincia interviewed Rob about Remember Me. Some fun questions and answers as well as the standard Remember Me information we already know.

Is your character in RM the closest interpretation of your on personality?
No. I think it’s impossible to represent yourself being fully aware of what you’re trying to do. I try to choose characters that are not like me at all. The more unknown they are to me, the better I can play them because then I don’t feel vulnerable.

Do you like the tortured characters?
Those are the ones that I’m being offered. Subconsciously I try to be like my characters, and I live my fantasies through them. I’d love to be a confused young person that fights for his ideals, but I’m not like that.

Everyone beats him up in RM.
I prefer to be hit than hitting. It’s more interesting.

How would you describe the movie?
It’s a movie about a life style, about love and the desire to live. The story is told through the eyes of Tyler, who is not aware of the consequences of the relationships he has.

Trauma seems to be everyone’s bond in the movie.
Yes, all the characters in the movie have faced death somehow, losing a family member. So there’s a connection with them through grief.

This is your first movie since New Moon, is that a relief?
Yes. I wanted to do a smaller film. Something with a modest budget that I could film in between filming the Twilight movies. I wanted a story that was more realistic because I was getting a bit tired of the fantasy genre. I needed to play a regular character that faced normal issues.
